This seems like one of the harder hard modes to do, especially compared to deconstructor, which we one shot our first try, that was a joke.
Unfortunately for me, the weapons in the game I crave the most are the staves that drop off both 10 and 25 man hodir hard mode in ulduar.
Staff of endless winter is better overall across all mage specs, but for arcane, which is what I usually raid as, the haste on the icecore staff is actually the better itemization choice, so even though the item level and spellpower is a TINY bit lower, it is still VERY close in terms of its dps increase to the staff of endless winter.
I REALLY want the icecore staff, and to do that, Hodir MUST die in under 3 minutes.
So I come to you mages, to tap your collective knowledge about being more efficient at the fight.
I am sure frostfire is one of the better specs for this fight, went as arcane and went oom to often trying to dps heavy. But then there is the issue of threat management, and worrying about the tank, and what about raid comps that would gel best with one mage.
I need more tricks.
What/who is the best person to keep the toasty fire debuff up on the boss once stacks are high?
moonbeams are self explanatory, but the crit buffs are harder for me to spot in the chaos, and in that chaos looking for it I lose dps time, that is my biggest issue, losing dps time due to trying to get the right buffs and not going overboard on aggro, it's a mess.
I am NOT a clueless mage or bad at dps, but multiple targets and massive aggro concerns and buff syncs slow my dps down a great deal, I need more practice I know, but for those that have taken this guy down, how did you improve?
I think it would be a great boon if raid icons did not reset, but anyway, need help.

A video isnt going to show you how to play a mage in a HM - Hodir attempt at all. First off start with spec. Mathematically FFB is the best assuming you have high crit rate due to the crit multiplier on the spell. Personally I have never had a lot of luck with this spec and highest dps output. I use TTW/Fire and on good attempts with my strat I am ~12,500 DPS. OK attempts I am ~9,000 DPS, and bad attempts I am at ~5,000-7,500 DPS. By good, ok and bad attempts I mean how often you get the proper buffs and are not made the buff bitch. - Step 1 Assist and break out blocks - Step 2 DPS Hodir Till shaman buffs - Step 3 Once first 2 shaman buffs are out ~20 sec into fight get a lust or a hero popped and start dropping hard DPS - Step 4 Once you are close to threat cap pop images so you don't pull aggro - Step 5 As soon as the flash freeze starts and images are gone use frost ward and then invis, getting an invis off is the difference between 8,000 DPS and 12-13,000 DPS - Step 6 Once freeze is over break blocks and repeat and assuming your tank is not horrible you should not have thread problems again Other Notes - Shaman buff lasts 30sec, and is recast every ~25 sec. If you have the buff with 5 sec left you cannot get a new refreshed buff till its gone and by that time other people would of got it. - Mages on this encounter are normally towards the top of the meter and if you can pull 10,000 DPS + you should click off the shaman buff with 2-5 sec left on it to get a new one to continue high dps. - When possible stand in lights and by fires ect. Let me know what you think, but this has helped me and in 10 man we kill it in ~2 min and in 25 man we kill it in 2:45sec. |
